The Second Deer

So this picture…

… has been making the rounds on my facebook feed recently. The challenge is to find the second deer in the picture within 5 seconds.  (I’ll give you a second – go on, find it!)

This picture is a perfect description of why I write.

Because all novels have a ‘deer in the winter woods’. Plot, characters, rising and falling tension, all those thing. That’s enough for a painting and its enough for a novel.

But good novels – beautiful novels, creative novels – also have a second deer. The story that hides in plain sight, the story that looms larger and more beautiful than the first. Something that combines the basic story with a higher element that  readers only see if they’re looking for it.

What’s your favorite story that does this?
